At least 37 individuals have been arrested this year during protests against AI data centers across the United States. Residents have raised concerns regarding electricity demand, water use, pollution, land use, tax incentives, and government transparency. Notable arrests include Oklahoma resident Darren Blanchard in February for exceeding a public comment limit, Indiana resident Pablo Payan in May for refusing to identify himself at a public meeting, and Kansas teacher Lux Claridge in July for clapping during a zoning hearing. Opposition to AI infrastructure is evolving into a national political movement, with Tennessee state Rep. Justin Pearson advocating for data center moratoriums and increased oversight. The term 'Luddite' is being used to describe those opposing new technologies like AI. Advocacy group Humans First reported organizing 142 protests in 42 states during a national day of action against AI data centers. Additionally, around 200 protesters from Stop the AI Race marched in San Francisco, demanding a halt to the development of more powerful AI models. The debate over AI data centers is shifting from local disputes to broader discussions about the benefits and costs associated with AI development.
