Aave USDC Lending Market Faces Increased Borrowing Costs Due to Liquidity Shifts
In the Aave (AAVE) USDC lending market, large-scale liquidity movements occur every night, increasing the interest burden on variable-rate borrowers. A specific wallet is reportedly moving around $190 million daily, causing users in the same pool to bear higher variable interest rates. Aave's USDC market has a target utilization rate of 92%, and exceeding this threshold leads to a sharp rise in borrowing rates. In fact, when the utilization rate rises from 92% to 100%, the interest rate jumps from 4% to 14%. Since June 27, the average borrowing amount has remained at $1.89 billion, but a pattern has emerged where over $150 million in USDC leaves the pool at midnight only to return later. This has caused available liquidity to plummet from about $210 million to as low as $33,000. Analysts have identified a specific wallet as the center of this flow, which withdraws and reinvests funds at set times each day. Such liquidity movements translate into direct costs for borrowers, with a borrower taking out $1 million incurring an average additional cost of $9 per day, amounting to approximately $3,280 annually. For the entire USDC pool, borrowers are effectively paying an additional $17,000 daily, or about $6 million annually. This case highlights the structural weaknesses of decentralized lending and illustrates why fixed-rate markets are being considered as an alternative.
