Amazon Device Price Increase: Echo Dot Costs 60% More
Up to 60% more for a simple Echo Dot: this is the increase that Amazon has applied in recent days to a significant portion of its hardware catalog. The price increase for Amazon devices has affected the Echo, Kindle, Fire TV Stick, and eero routers, and the reason is not a commercial whim but the skyrocketing cost of memory and storage chips across the tech industry.
The most noticeable price hike concerns the fifth-generation Echo Dot, which has risen from $49.99 to $79.99, exactly a 60% increase. This is not an isolated case: the Fire TV Stick 4K Max goes from $59.99 to $84.99 (+41.7%), the 16GB Kindle from $109.99 to $149.99 (+36.4%), and the Echo Spot from $79.99 to $109.99 (+37.5%).
Even the more expensive models have not been spared, albeit with smaller percentages: the Echo Show 21 goes from $399.99 to $499.99 (+25%), while the Echo Dot Max, launched just last year, rises from $99.99 to $119.99 (+20%). On the networking front, packs of three eero 7 and eero Pro 7 routers both increase by 14.3%, bringing them to $399.99 and $799.99, respectively.
However, the Ring cameras and video doorbells, along with the high-end Echo Studio, remain excluded from the increases, staying at $219.99.
Behind every single figure lies the same explanation: the cost of memory and storage components has risen drastically throughout the consumer electronics supply chain. This was directly confirmed by Amazon through an official statement.
Kristy Schmidt, senior communications manager for Amazon's Devices & Services division, explained that "the consumer electronics industry is facing significant increases in the costs of memory and storage components." She added that the company has absorbed these price hikes "as much as possible" before adjusting prices, emphasizing that the goal remains to offer "valid products at affordable prices."
The root of the problem lies upstream in the supply chain. Companies developing artificial intelligence are absorbing much of the available DRAM and NAND flash memory supplies to power data centers and processing systems, creating an acute shortage for all other sectors. Major memory chip manufacturers have also shifted resources and budgets toward more profitable enterprise components, leaving only residual margins for the consumer market.
This phenomenon is not limited to Seattle. In June, Apple raised prices on some iPad and MacBook models due to the same pressures on chip costs. At the beginning of August, it was Microsoft's turn, which increased prices for Xbox consoles.
Microsoft issued a warning that weighs on the future of the entire sector: consumer prices could double again by autumn 2027 due to the rising costs of memory and storage.
The picture that emerges confirms a structural dynamic, not a temporary price increase linked to a single product or company. When three giants like Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft raise prices within the same timeframe citing the same cause, it means that the chip shortage is reshaping the economy of the entire consumer electronics sector, not just that of a niche market.
The crisis, now dubbed "RAMageddon", does not seem destined to resolve soon. According to industry forecasts, the shortage of memory and storage is expected to persist at least until 2028, likely even longer.
For those purchasing technology devices, this means one concrete thing: the higher prices seen on Echo, Kindle, Fire TV, and eero are not an isolated episode, but a preview of what could become a market standard for the coming years. The AI industry's demand for DRAM and NAND shows no signs of slowing down, and as long as chip manufacturers continue to prioritize enterprise customers, the consumer market will remain in the weakest position in the supply chain.
