Big Tech's Capital Expenditures Reach $745 Billion Amid Intensifying AI Competition
Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta's combined capital expenditures this year could reach $745 billion, primarily directed towards chips, servers, data centers, and networks. The AI competition is shifting from model capabilities to computational scale and commercial returns. Cloud services are the first area to see revenue, with Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud experiencing revenue growth of 43%, 37%, and 82%, respectively. Amazon reported that its annualized revenue from generative AI services and self-developed chip business has exceeded $25 billion. Microsoft is integrating AI into enterprise software, with paid seats for Microsoft 365 Copilot surpassing 30 million, doubling the net new seats quarter-over-quarter. Meta's advertising revenue grew by 27%, but its quarterly capital expenditures reached $31.1 billion, leaving only $784 million in free cash flow, with its AI investments primarily relying on advertising revenue recovery. The market supports the tech giants' increased investment in AI but is beginning to focus on cash returns post-investment. Following their earnings reports, Microsoft and Amazon saw their stock prices rise; Alphabet, despite growth in cloud business, faced concerns over capital expenditures and cash flow; Meta is grappling with declining profits, shrinking cash flow, and rising AI spending, leading to a significant drop in its stock price after its earnings report.
