Blumenthal stated that the crypto regulation bill would weaken oversight
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal has once again raised his criticisms of the cryptocurrency sector. The Democratic senator representing Connecticut argued that criminals use digital assets for quick and irreversible money transfers following a victim's testimony in a romance scam case. In a statement after a Senate forum held on Capitol Hill, Blumenthal claimed that cryptocurrencies have become the preferred tool for criminals. Citing the testimony of Lori Flowers, who suffered significant losses due to a romance scam in 2022, he noted that scammers use crypto to move funds quickly and that transactions cannot be reversed. Blumenthal also criticized the CLARITY Act bill in the forum he held earlier this week. The bill aims to create a clearer regulatory framework for digital assets, but Blumenthal expressed that the text would weaken the enforcement power by limiting the role of state attorneys general and leave ethical protections inadequate. The CLARITY Act seeks to more clearly define the jurisdictions regarding the crypto market in the U.S. Blumenthal's stance aligns with that of other Democratic figures in the Senate. Elizabeth Warren, a senior Democratic member of the Banking Committee, argued that there are significant gaps in the final text of the bill. Recently, the political rhetoric towards the crypto sector has intensified on the progressive side.
