Crypto: Solana Reduces Block Creation Time to 350 Milliseconds
A slot is a tiny window where a validator produces a block. On Friday, Solana shortened it from 400 milliseconds to 350. Nothing spectacular at first glance, except it comes at a time when the market is looking at SOL with an interest it hasn't had in months.
In brief
- Solana has reduced its slot time from 400 to 350 milliseconds, with three more steps remaining before the final goal of 200 milliseconds.
- The reduction in slot time accelerates latency for crypto users without increasing the overall capacity of the Solana network.
- SOL has surged to over $91, driven by seven consecutive weeks of ETF inflows and the announcement from the U.S. Treasury.
From 400 to 350 milliseconds: the first step of a four-phase plan for Solana
The mainnet update carried out on Friday morning on Solana reduces the target slot time to 350 milliseconds from 400 previously. This figure corresponds to the brief period during which a designated validator produces a block of crypto transactions. The change is part of SIMD-0525, an improvement proposal that charts a path towards a final goal of 200 milliseconds on SOL, which is half the historical time of the network.
However, faster transaction confirmations for crypto users do not equate to a throughput boost. The Solana network does not process more work per second; it simply reshapes the time differently:
- Epochs, these cycles of 432,000 slots, go from about 48 hours to around 42 hours;
- Validators holding onto 4 slots in a row change turns every 1.4 seconds instead of 1.6;
- A period of 1000 slots, which took 415 seconds before the change, now takes only 368.
Three other steps of 50 milliseconds are planned before reaching the targeted 200 ms by Solana, and each will be activated separately. Even the deployment could be suspended if too many validators struggle to produce their blocks in the allotted time. With no fixed date at the moment, developers want to first observe how the network handles the 350 ms before moving to the next step.
Crypto: a market momentum that comes at the right time for SOL
This technical update on Solana does not arrive in a vacuum and coincides with a real resurgence of SOL in the crypto market. The token has risen over 19% in the week, crossing the $94 mark! The highest level in nearly three months.
The momentum comes not only from the price of SOL but also from Solana ETFs that have just recorded their seventh consecutive week of positive inflows. The week of August 10 to 14 saw $10.26 million enter, the best performance since May 22. Two factors explain this rise:
- The U.S. Treasury's announcement to extend its debt buyback operations, which injected liquidity into the entire crypto market;
- The reduction in slot time that served as a positive technical signal for crypto investors already attentive to the Solana ecosystem.
Solana's official account did not miss the opportunity to celebrate, posting a message honoring the spirit of builders and innovators who continued to build when no one believed. A communication choice that speaks volumes about the confidence displayed by the team at the precise moment when prices and technical fundamentals finally move in the same direction.
These two technical and financial dynamics remain distinct. The slot time at 350 milliseconds on Solana does not guarantee anything for the price of SOL, and the inflows into ETFs do not presage the success of the remaining three steps towards 200 milliseconds. But for once, both indicators are green at the same time, and that is perhaps the most important.
