Estonia to Impose Sanctions on Transit of Russian Grain
Estonia plans to introduce national sanctions to prohibit the transit of Russian grain through its ports. Currently, such shipments are virtually non-existent, but Russia is seeking alternative export routes due to logistical issues in the Black Sea. Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Estonian freight operators should not plan to transport Russian grain through the country, as Tallinn does not consider the use of its ports for this export acceptable. Tsahkna also linked Estonia's position to Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports and obstacles to the export of Ukrainian grain to global markets, noting that the country should not assist Russia in solving its export logistics problems. Estonia intends to coordinate its actions with Latvia and Lithuania to seek a regional or pan-European mechanism that would limit the transit of Russian grain and prevent the export of agricultural products from occupied territories in Ukraine. If the volumes of Russian grain heading towards Estonia begin to increase, Tallinn is prepared to impose additional restrictions. Latvia is already preparing a 300% tariff on Russian and Belarusian grain transiting through its ports and is considering a complete halt to such transit.
