European Central Bank Plans to Launch Pontes in Q3 2026
The European Central Bank (ECB) is advancing the design of a system that connects tokenized asset payments with central bank currency. On August 26, Pierro Cipollone, an executive board member of the ECB, announced at the Bundesbank symposium that they aim to establish an operational foundation for tokenized finance through Pontes and Apia. Pontes is a system that links the market DLT platform with the Eurosystem's TARGET services, finalizing cash payments with central bank currency. The initial launch is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026, with plans to extend operating hours to 22.5 hours and to provide 24/7 service by mid-2028. Apia represents a broader long-term roadmap, aiming to present a blueprint for the tokenized finance ecosystem by 2028. It emphasizes the roles of central depositories and central clearinghouses to address the fragmentation issues in European capital markets, suggesting that tokenization can integrate payments, custody, and asset services. However, there are concerns that if central bank currency does not remain as a payment anchor, reliance on private payment methods may increase. The current policy direction and roadmap have been confirmed, and Pontes is expected to gradually expand its functionalities after launching in Q3 2026.
