France Allocates Over 1 Billion Euros to Farmers Due to Heat
The French government has allocated more than 1 billion euros to support farmers who suffered losses due to heatwaves and wildfires this summer. The funds will be directed towards compensating for crop losses from drought and measures to restore agricultural activities. France's Minister of Agriculture, Annie Genevard, noted that this is new funding, not a redistribution of previously allocated expenses. As a leading agricultural producer in Europe, France has faced the consequences of a hot summer, and the meteorological service Météo-France has warned of the fifth heatwave of the year. The economic repercussions include a decline in agricultural production, bringing the country closer to recession and limiting the government's ability to reduce the budget deficit. A decrease in exports and an increase in agricultural imports have led to a drop in the positive trade balance, intensifying farmers' protests. Last month, a law was passed to protect the sector, which includes incentives for livestock farming and the development of irrigation systems. Earlier reports indicated a decline in crop yields across Europe, particularly in France, where corn harvests fell by 35%, and the damage to Italy's agricultural sector is estimated at over 3 billion euros.
