Hungary to Introduce Wealth Tax, Expected Revenue of $1.86 Billion
The Hungarian government plans to introduce a wealth tax for individuals with incomes and assets exceeding $3,100,000. This initiative is a promise from Prime Minister Péter Márki-Zay to strengthen taxation on the wealthiest segments of the population. The regulatory framework for the new tax is already prepared, and it will mark an important milestone in the country's economic policy. Budapest needs additional funding sources due to one of the largest budget deficits in the EU, which stands at 7.5% of GDP. The Prime Minister noted that the tax is not punitive but aims to enhance the social responsibility of wealthy citizens. The specific tax rate and the list of assets subject to the tax have not yet been disclosed. Previously, an agency was established in Hungary to recover funds stolen during the rule of Viktor Orbán.
