Anthropic Discovers Human-like Consciousness Features in Claude Model
On July 7, Anthropic released a research report revealing the existence of an internal "global workspace" in the Claude model, referred to as J-space (Jacobian space). This area is a collection of neural activation patterns that allow the model to engage in silent thinking, enabling it to contemplate concepts without producing outputs, akin to human "conscious" thought. The research identified neural activation patterns in J-space using Jacobian techniques, allowing for the reading of concepts not expressed by the model and modifications to these patterns. Experimental results indicated that disabling J-space weakens the model's multi-step reasoning abilities but does not affect its basic task performance and factual recall capabilities.
