Institutional Ethereum Highlights Privacy Issues

Discussions around the use of Ethereum (ETH) by institutions are shifting towards privacy concerns. While the transparency of public blockchains enhances verifiability, it poses challenges for banks and asset management firms as their positions and trading flows become exposed. EthSystems announced its official launch as a privacy provider for institutional Ethereum on July 14. The company was formed by a team that spun off from the Ethereum Foundation's Institutional Privacy Task Force (IPTF). Initial sponsors include Bitmain, Sharplink Gaming, SNZ Capital, and Joseph Lubin. EthSystems aims to create a structure that allows institutions to handle confidential transactions and audit requirements on public Ethereum. Co-founder Mo Jalil noted that institutional demand is generally coming in first, explaining that while institutions want DeFi functionalities, they require solutions that align with regulations and internal controls. Co-founder Oscar Torren suggested that institutional privacy could develop in a separate sandbox format. EthSystems emphasizes that the issue is not merely a binary opposition between transparency and concealment, but rather the need to control access to information on a public ledger. The Ethereum Foundation's institutional privacy page reflects similar concerns. The technological pillars include zero-knowledge proofs, fully homomorphic encryption, trusted execution environments, and privacy-centric layer 2 solutions. EthSystems stated that it has engaged with hundreds of institutions through its IPTF activities last year.
