IonQ unveiled its Superion 256 quantum computer, opening orders for delivery in 2027. The Maryland-based company specializes in quantum computers and cloud services, along with quantum networking, sensing, and security technology. IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi stated that Superion is a result of strategic acquisitions, enabling control of trapped-ion qubits and manufacturing at semiconductor costs. IonQ's subsidiary, SkyWater, has produced the first 256-qubit processors, with prototypes successfully trapping ions in several U.S. facilities. A qubit, the basic unit of information in quantum computing, can exist in multiple states, allowing for complex calculations. The effectiveness of a 256-qubit computer relies on the reliable operation of its qubits. IonQ plans to manufacture these systems using established chipmaking methods. Superion 256 is designed for mass production, with a focus on upgradeability. SkyWater has reduced the chip design cycle from nine months to two. The system fits standard server racks and will be available through IonQ's cloud services. The first system was pre-sold for early 2026 delivery. IonQ is also developing Superion 10K, targeting error-resistant computing by 2027 and commercial production by 2028. This announcement coincides with discussions on the potential threat of quantum computers to Bitcoin security, as a sufficiently powerful machine could compromise public keys. However, a 256-qubit machine does not inherently break 256-bit security. Galaxy has announced up to 5 million dollars in funding for Bitcoin quantum-security initiatives.
