IRS Warns of Cryptocurrency Phishing Attacks, Fake Letters to Steal Private Keys
The IRS has issued a warning about a phishing campaign targeting cryptocurrency holders. Attackers are sending fake official tax letters to lure users into scanning malicious QR codes to steal cryptocurrency wallet credentials and private keys. The attackers impersonate the IRS by sending physical letters, creating a sense of urgency under the guise of "tax compliance" and "account verification," and include QR codes in the letters. Once users scan the code, they may be directed to a spoofed website that can compromise their wallet login information, recovery phrases, or private keys, leading to the theft of digital assets. The IRS reminds taxpayers that official agencies will not request private keys or recovery phrases for cryptocurrency wallets through unofficial channels. Cryptocurrency holders should be vigilant against any suspicious emails or letters requesting them to scan QR codes, connect wallets, or submit sensitive information. As the number of cryptocurrency asset holders grows, social engineering attacks targeting digital wallets continue to rise, prompting regulatory and security agencies to enhance warnings against related scams.
