Wall Street quant trading giant Jane Street faced a significant loss of approximately $15 billion in July due to its investment in the AI hedge fund Situational Awareness. Sources revealed that this loss figure was disclosed to creditors during a financial update, involving a private debt financing deal of about $14.6 billion led by JPMorgan, which included transferring around $11 billion of public debt to private investors. The loss stemmed from a sharp correction in U.S. AI stocks in July, with the Situational Awareness fund suffering heavily due to concentrated, high-leverage bets on AI stocks, forcing it to sell part of its public equity positions to Citadel. Despite this substantial monthly loss, Jane Street has maintained strong profitability in recent years, with record net trading revenue reaching $16.1 billion in Q1 2026 and approximately $40 billion for the entire year of 2025. Market participants noted that this loss is relatively rare for a self-proprietary trading firm that has remained low-profile while holding a significant position in global markets. Jane Street's subsequent shift to private debt market financing will reduce its scope of financial disclosures to the public market.
