Japan Promotes AI Platform for Material Data
The Japanese government is pushing for the establishment of a shared platform that analyzes manufacturers' material data using artificial intelligence (AI). The goal is to increase the speed of new material development by approximately ten times compared to the current rate. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is preparing a platform that collects companies' material data to find chemical compositions and formulations using AI, with plans to launch it as early as the 2027 fiscal year. This initiative focuses on reducing trial and error in the material development process. The Japanese government aims to shorten this process by combining corporate data with AI analysis and computational infrastructure. The method of finding new material combinations using AI is gradually spreading in the materials industry, and Japan is riding the trend of reducing traditional experimental iterations and enhancing industrial research and development efficiency based on integrated data and computational infrastructure. METI is working on a plan to consolidate material-related data scattered across companies through this platform, aligning with the policy direction of leveraging manufacturing site data and AI utilization as the foundation for industrial competitiveness. The approximately tenfold reduction proposed by the Japanese government is merely a policy goal, and the actual effectiveness may vary depending on the level of corporate data sharing, intellectual property protection measures, and the scope of platform participation.
