In his speech commemorating the 81st anniversary of Liberation Day, President Lee Jae-myung proposed discussions to transform the Korean Peninsula's armistice regime into a peace regime. He stated that effective measures to halt North Korea's nuclear capability enhancement could also be discussed. During the ceremony held on the 15th at the Sejong Center in Jongno, Seoul, he mentioned the end of war and the transition to a peace regime, urging to set aside mutual threats and start discussions. The armistice regime is a framework for managing the cessation of hostilities, while the peace regime institutionalizes the end of war and the establishment of stable relations. President Lee emphasized the need for dialogue to stop unnecessary confrontations between the two Koreas and to achieve peaceful coexistence and joint growth. He also mentioned the necessity of systems and safeguards to control tensions and conflicts. Regarding South Korea-Japan relations, he highlighted the importance of practical national interest diplomacy, stating that sincerity regarding historical issues is the starting point for trust. He referred to the 1998 Kim Dae-jung-Obuchi Joint Declaration, emphasizing the courage to face the past and the need for future cooperation. As domestic tasks, he raised issues of growth, balance, and expanding opportunities, also mentioning the burden of inflation and youth job insecurity. The commemoration speech included recognition of independence activists and the recovery of assets from pro-Japanese collaborators.
