Quantum computer attack may mimic wallet hack, says Quantus co-founder
Quantus Network co-founder Christopher Smith stated that the first attack by a quantum computer capable of breaking modern cryptography may not resemble a typical BTC theft. A powerful quantum computer could derive private keys from public keys exposed on-chain, enabling fund theft without indications of a wallet or exchange breach. Smith noted that attackers might focus on exchange hot wallets or keys that can issue Tether (USDT), rather than targeting Satoshi’s wallets. He estimated a 50% chance that the first such attack could occur by 2028 and emphasized the need for the industry to expedite the transition to post-quantum cryptography.
