Reddit Tests Audio and Video Post Experience

Reddit has begun testing a new way to present posts, expanding into playable audio and video experiences. Some posts will offer options to continue reading or play content directly. This test will be rolled out in select communities, covering some English posts, and will be available through Reddit's iOS and Android apps. Currently, it is an early, small-scale experiment aimed at observing user preferences for different content formats and whether this product is suitable for broader use on the platform. The new feature will not replace existing text posts; original content and comment sections will still be retained, allowing users to continue browsing and interacting. Some posts will include new "Read" or "Play" options, designed to cover more use cases, such as allowing users to consume community content via audio while exercising or handling daily tasks. Reddit mentioned this plan during its second-quarter earnings call in July, with CEO Steve Huffman stating that users have been consuming Reddit content in similar ways on other platforms, indicating that "audible Reddit" has appeal. Over the past few years, Reddit has launched native video hosting features and experimented with short video platform feeds, and recently introduced video functionality in comment sections, which now accounts for over 10% of video posts on the platform.
