Samsung Electronics' System LSI Division has applied Anthropic's AI coding tool, Claude Code, to semiconductor design and verification, reducing the duration of some verification tasks from one month to two days. This result comes from utilizing Claude Code for verifying data connection structures in customer-specific System-on-Chips (SoCs), with an example of a second-year engineer completing the development of a USB device model and adapting an Android driver in just one day. Claude Code is a tool that supports developers in delegating coding tasks to AI, and performance differences were observed in AI coding agent evaluations based on the execution tools used. After opening Claude Code to software developers in May this year, Samsung has expanded its application scope to the semiconductor development field. The System LSI Division employs around 6,000 people and is pursuing a strategy to bridge the workforce gap with major competitor Qualcomm through AI tools. However, there are challenges in directly applying AI-generated results in semiconductor design and verification tasks, and Samsung has stated that the scope of AI work and its outputs must be strictly controlled, with final reviews conducted by humans. The DS Division is promoting an 'AI transformation' that expands the use of generative AI from research and development to production, marketing, and support tasks.
