Ukraine and Japan Establish Network of Laboratories for Analyzing De-mined Soils

In Ukraine, a Center of Excellence for soil analysis will be created to safely return de-mined areas to agricultural use. The initiative includes testing the GRIT system with artificial intelligence and forming a network of laboratories and research institutions working under unified methodologies. Deputy Minister Igor Bezkaraivny noted that the cleared land must be suitable for use, which requires assessing soil safety and integrating de-mining with restoration and economic activities. Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have agreed on steps to restore contaminated areas, including a pilot project in the Izium district of Kharkiv region. A digital GRIT system is used to determine the priority of de-mining, combining data on mine hazards and the economic situation. The region is also testing an AI-based damage assessment module that will help identify farms in need of support. The network of laboratories will include the Institute of Soil Protection of Ukraine, the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, and other specialized laboratories. JICA will consider the possibility of providing technical assistance and organizing training visits to Japan. As part of the Women, Peace and Security initiative, JICA will transfer the results of the training visit to the new Gender Working Group in Ukraine.
