Ukraine plans to transport grain cargo through Moldova by rail as a safer method of export. Kyiv is negotiating with Chișinău for a 50% discount on the railway tariff for transporting grain to the Romanian port of Constanța. Moldovan railway workers have offered guarantees on cargo volumes in response to Ukraine's request. The creation of the new corridor has become necessary due to the increase in Russian attacks on the port infrastructure of Odesa. According to former director of the Moldovan railway Oleg Tofilat, the corridor could facilitate the transport of up to 4.5 million tons of grain per year, which would account for about 10% of Ukrainian exports. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy has lowered its grain export forecast for the 2026-2027 season from 43 million to 38-40 million tons due to shelling of ports. Analysts at APK-Inform have also reduced their estimate by 8.6% to 39.4 million tons. Moldovan Prime Minister Vasily Tofan noted that the country should take the opportunity to profit from the transit of Ukrainian products.
