Ukraine Completes Audit to Resume Poultry Exports to Japan
Ukraine and Japan are in the final stages of resuming chicken and egg exports. The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has begun an online audit of Ukrainian enterprises and the state control system to lift a five-year ban on imports. Ukraine has been exporting poultry to Japan since 2020 and eggs since 2021; however, an outbreak of avian influenza among wild birds in 2021 led to the suspension of certification for Ukrainian products. Since then, Ukraine has been negotiating with MAFF and has provided the necessary data on its state control system. A trial remote audit took place on September 28-29, 2025. During the current audit, Japanese specialists are assessing the control system and the operations of enterprises preparing products for export. Oleg Osiyany, the First Deputy Chairman of the State Consumer Service, noted that restoring access for Ukrainian products to the Japanese market is the result of prolonged efforts. If the audit results are positive, Japan will be able to lift restrictions on Ukrainian enterprises. In the first half of 2026, Ukrainian companies exported 248.4 thousand tons of poultry, which is a 9.7% increase compared to the previous year, although total revenue decreased by 1.8% to 526.4 million dollars.
