Revolut and Visa Test AI-Initiated Payment in France

- The main variable is whether this remains a controlled pilot or moves into wider merchant and consumer use. The test shows that AI-assisted checkout can run on existing card rails, but scale will depend on how issuers, merchants and payment networks handle consent, authentication and fraud controls.
- Market participants should also watch how much decision-making is delegated to the AI agent. Revolut said the customer remained central to validation, which suggests payment firms are trying to frame agentic commerce as supervised automation rather than autonomous spending.
- Another key point is infrastructure compatibility. Because the transaction used Visa’s current security stack and issuer controls, follow-through from other merchants or financial institutions would matter more than the pilot itself.
Revolut said it has completed an AI-initiated payment test in France with Visa, marking what it described as the country’s first secure transaction of its kind in a real merchant purchase flow.
According to Revolut, the test was carried out with Visa and merchant Cleverbridge. An AI agent handled the purchase steps with the customer’s permission and proceeded to payment using Visa Payment Passkey for authentication. Revolut said the exercise was designed to examine how this type of transaction works in real shopping conditions while maintaining customer consent and issuer oversight.
The company described the payment as relying on Visa’s existing infrastructure, including card security and real-time fraud monitoring. That makes the pilot less a new payment rail than an experiment in how AI agents can operate within established card-network controls. Revolut positioned the test as part of a broader push toward AI-powered commerce that reduces friction in everyday payments.
The announcement does not indicate a broad product launch. Revolut described the transaction as an experiment, and it did not disclose commercial rollout plans, transaction volume, additional merchant partners or the conditions under which similar payments could be offered more widely. The company’s emphasis remained on testing operational and security features in a real transaction environment.
The timing also points to a wider payments industry effort to define how AI agents can participate in commerce without weakening user authorization standards. Revolut said 51% of the French population uses AI tools for shopping. It also noted that the company, founded in 2015, recently obtained a French banking license and has reached a valuation of $115 billion.
Why It Matters
The test is notable because it shifts the AI payments discussion from theory to an executed merchant transaction on mainstream financial infrastructure. For the sector, the question is no longer only whether AI can recommend products or build carts, but whether it can complete payments in a way that card issuers, networks and users will accept.
It also matters for how financial firms define control in AI commerce. If future payment flows are built around customer permission, passkey authentication and issuer monitoring, agentic shopping could develop as an extension of existing payment systems rather than a separate model. That would lower adoption barriers for large payment and fintech platforms, even if broad rollout remains early.
