Securitize, a leading asset tokenization platform, reported a record average of $4.3 billion in tokenized assets during Q2, while revenue fell 5% to $14.4 million and net loss increased to $21.7 million.
This raises a larger question for the cryptocurrency asset market: why did revenue decline while assets and trading activity surged?
Securitize reported a record average of $4.3 billion in assets under management in token form during the second quarter, a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. The total assets under management in token form also reached $4.3 billion by the end of June, marking a 9% increase year-over-year.
The stronger growth came from activity on the platform, with total trading volume reaching $5.3 billion, up 147% from the same period last year.
Securitize's CEO, Carlos Domingo, stated:
"With approximately $5 billion in assets currently being managed on the blockchain and over seven assets, each with an asset under management (AUM) of $100 million or more, Securitize believes it is well-positioned for the next growth phase of asset tokenization for institutions."
Meanwhile, the figures indicate that an increasing number of assets are being traded through Securitize, but that growth has yet to translate into higher revenue.
Securitize reported total revenue of $14.4 million in Q2, down 5% from the same period last year. At the same time, the company reported a net loss of $21.7 million, compared to a loss of $6.1 million a year earlier.
The company's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) also turned negative, with a loss of $5.5 million, compared to a profit of $1.8 million in the same period last year.
Securitize's CFO, Francisco Flores, noted that quarterly revenue may continue to fluctuate during the company's current growth phase.
"We continue to make solid progress on our financial goals in the second quarter, reporting total revenue of $14.4 million."
The company is also developing new ways to bring traditional markets onto the blockchain. In Q2, Computershare and Continental Stock Transfer & Trust selected Securitize to support tokenized stocks for publicly listed companies in the U.S. The company is also expanding its relationship with the NYSE regarding tokenized stocks.
Securitize Markets has received FINRA approval to custody tokenized securities, allowing atomic settlement between tokenized securities and stablecoins.
Immediately after the quarter ended, Securitize began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on July 2, becoming the first asset tokenization company to go public.
Despite incurring larger losses, Securitize enters Q3 with a stronger balance sheet. The company has approximately $350 million in cash and no debt after completing its business merger.
The next challenge will be whether Securitize can convert its $4.3 billion in tokenized assets and $5.3 billion in quarterly trading volume into stable revenue.
