Discovered Materials Secures $9 Million for AI Semiconductor Thermal Management Materials Development
Discovered Materials has secured $9 million in seed funding through its project to find semiconductor thermal management materials using artificial intelligence (AI). The company plans to address the heat generation issues of AI chips and data centers at the material stage. The investment is led by Lightspeed, with participation from Y Combinator, Peak XV, and Paul Graham. Discovered Materials is developing AI agents to identify new materials for semiconductor chips, focusing on solving the heat problems of AI chips. Thermal interface materials are key components in the thermal management process, requiring synthesis, performance verification, and durability assessment for practical application. Y Combinator introduced Discovered Materials as a semiconductor and AI company participating in the Spring 2026 batch. The founders are Edvice Sridhar and Akash Lambdas, with Lambdas having researched semiconductor materials at Stanford. The company uses AI models to create and validate material candidates and recently changed its name from Matforge to Discovered Materials. There is an increasing influx of funding for AI material exploration companies, with Orbital Industries securing $50 million in Series B funding.
