Investor Becomes Multimillionaire After Recovering 61 Bitcoins Purchased in 2011
An anonymous investor managed to recover R$ 23.3 million in bitcoins purchased in 2011, when the cryptocurrency cost only a few dollars per unit. The case was shared last month by CEL Solicitors, a law firm in the UK that worked on the case.
The story recounts that Chris, a fictitious name, bought his first bitcoins from a British exchange called Britcoin, the first in the country, later renamed Intersango.
However, the exchange began winding down its activities in 2012, became completely inaccessible in 2014, and was formally dissolved in 2016. The investor was unable to withdraw his coins from the platform in time.
In his account, Chris comments that the worst part was watching Bitcoin rise continuously over the years.
"The worst was seeing Bitcoin appreciate and knowing what I could have done with the money. I haven't had much work in recent years, my son got married, my father-in-law passed away, and my wife had to leave her job to take care of her mother."
Stating that his parents are in their 80s with health issues, and that the new house of one of his children needs more renovations than he imagined, Chris mentions that he felt ashamed to talk about his lost bitcoins with his family.
"When I lost access to the wallet, it was a huge shock and quite devastating because our financial situation was not good. I had a young family, a new house, and it was money I couldn't afford to lose. My wallet had grown from an initial investment of £1,500 to about £4,000. For a long time, I didn't tell my family. When the value was rising, I had suggested to friends and family that they also buy Bitcoin. So, my friends knew I had it and commented on it over the years, about how much it had grown, but I didn't want to talk about it."
The investor's lawyers state that the case was a challenge, as they needed to gather essential documents, including bank records from nearly 15 years ago, after such a long time.
In addition, the firm also managed to trace a wallet supposedly linked to Intersango with over 5,500 bitcoins using specialized cryptocurrency tracking software to present in the process.
Besides Chris, the text notes that thousands of other investors went through the same situation with the closure of the exchange and recommends that these victims contact them.
Now a multimillionaire, the investor comments that he will not do anything crazy, but he already has some plans.
According to CEL Solicitors, their client managed to recover 61 bitcoins valued at £3,331,618 (R$ 23.3 million) after an out-of-court settlement. The investor mentions that he already has plans to spend part of the money.
"I'm not used to this kind of money. We've never struggled, but we've never been able to live the lifestyle we wanted. We remain grounded, and I wouldn't do anything crazy, but we need to move to a bigger house to better accommodate my mother-in-law and her disability-related needs. I can help my son pay off part of the loans for the new house."
In conclusion, Chris states that he wishes to keep some bitcoins in his wallet to track the cryptocurrency's rise. However, he admits that he will get nervous if it falls again.
