Luke Dashjr Demands the Forked Cryptocurrency Blake2b Be Called Bitcoin
Luke Dashjr states that there is no reason for Bitcoin to change its name. In September 2026, a hard fork will occur that introduces the Blake2b mining algorithm. The minority network, following a failed attempt to activate the BIP-110 proposal, has been stalled with only four blocks mined since block 961632 on August 8, 2026. Dashjr, the main proponent of BIP-110, insists that the new resulting cryptocurrency should be named Bitcoin, arguing that the network with BIP-110 will be the true Bitcoin. His stance has generated controversy, as promoter Rune Østgård proposed naming the new cryptocurrency Oresme, suggesting that the minority chain should not continue to be called Bitcoin. Østgård argued that this would protect the integrity of the cause. However, Dashjr dismissed the suggestion and accused Østgård of acting as a promoter for Bitcoin Cash. The BIP-110 chain failed to achieve consensus among miners and lacks protection against replay attacks, leading its supporters to prepare for the launch of an independent cryptocurrency with the new mining algorithm.
