Mexico: A $1.5M Bitcoin Wallet Linked to the Murder of a Musician and His Family
A Bitcoin wallet estimated at $1.5 million has emerged in the investigation into the murder of Mexican musician Jonathan Meléndez, his wife, their 3-year-old daughter, and a housekeeper. Two suspects were arrested less than twelve hours after the incident. However, the exact link to the BTC remains to be established: Mexican authorities confirm a demand for money and a business dispute, but not yet the amount of $1.5 million.
In Brief
- Four people were killed on September 1 in Atizapán de Zaragoza, near Mexico City.
- Local media report a hardware wallet containing $1.5 million in bitcoin.
- Authorities confirm a demand for money but have not officially validated this amount or the exact role of the wallet.
Jonathan Meléndez, 38, was the keyboardist for the Mexican band Camilo Séptimo. On September 1, he was found dead in his apartment along with his pregnant wife, their 3-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old housekeeper. The family's dog was also killed. A 6-year-old boy present at the scene survived. The case comes as physical assaults related to cryptocurrencies have already caused over $30 million in losses in 2026.
Two men, identified as Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, have been apprehended. Mexican Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, indicated that the main suspect had a business relationship with Meléndez. He also confirmed that a sum of money was demanded before the quadruple murder.
Authorities have not yet made all details public. Harfuch explained that the prosecutor's office wanted to preserve certain information before the first hearing. This is precisely where bitcoin enters the case.
Bitcoin.com, relying on local media with access to the investigation, reports that Jonathan Meléndez owned approximately $1.5 million in bitcoin on a hardware wallet. The suspects may have been aware of these assets and entered the home to retrieve the device.
A second element appears in this information: Gerardo was reportedly promised nearly $120,000 to participate in the operation. One of the suspects knew the victim well enough to access the residence without immediately raising suspicion.
However, caution is still required regarding the case. When publicly questioned about the demanded amount, Omar García Harfuch replied that he did not know the figure. He confirmed a financial demand and threats, without mentioning Bitcoin or a $1.5 million wallet. The Mexican presidency also refers to a financial dispute and a business relationship between the parties involved.
Thus, the crypto amount should be considered, at this stage, as information derived from the investigation reported by local press, and not as an officially established fact. This distinction matters. Cases of this type are often quickly classified among assaults where physical violence replaces cyber theft. Cointribune had already noted a 75% increase in these attacks between 2024 and 2025.
The Mexican case arrives in an already very busy year. Chainalysis has recorded 46 violent incidents related to cryptocurrencies up to the end of June 2026, compared to 40 during the same period in 2025. More than $30 million has indeed been stolen. Home burglaries now account for 37% of recorded incidents, up from 26% in 2023.
The most interesting figure lies elsewhere: only 12 out of 46 attacks resulted in a payment or transfer of funds. The success rate has thus fallen to 26%, down from 49% in 2025. Violence is increasing despite decreased effectiveness. A hardware wallet protects private keys against many digital attacks. It obviously does not protect its owner against someone who knows their identity, assets, and address.
France is already familiar with this problem. In January, a woman was kidnapped in Manosque to access the cryptocurrencies supposedly held by her partner. In Mexico, the investigation will now need to determine whether the $1.5 million in bitcoin truly constituted the primary motive for the quadruple murder or if it merely represents an element of a broader financial dispute. For now, the demand for money is confirmed. The amount in BTC, however, has not yet been officially verified.
