SpaceX Pushes for Internal Data Learning in Grok
SpaceX is working on a plan to incorporate the company's internal engineering data and employee work knowledge into its artificial intelligence model, Grok. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, stated in an internal meeting that Grok will be trained as the 'sum of all SpaceX information.' The scope of employee data usage and the possibility of opting out of learning have not been disclosed. Musk explained on X on July 21 that SpaceX's 'world-class vast engineering data' will be used for Grok's supplementary learning, adding that materials restricted by ITAR will be excluded. According to a revised annual report submitted by Tesla, xAI Holdings will be fully integrated as a subsidiary of SpaceX on February 2, 2026. This means that decisions related to Grok will be integrated into SpaceX's business structure. The acquisition of xAI by SpaceX could raise governance and regulatory scrutiny issues due to the combination of AI developers and defense contracting companies. There has already been controversy regarding the handling of Grok's data, with the Canadian privacy watchdog determining that X and xAI did not obtain valid consent. It remains unclear what materials SpaceX will use for training and which will be excluded.
