The U.S. to Create a Commercial Nuclear Fleet to Compete with China
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is entering into an agreement with the British company Core Power to build a fleet of civilian ships powered by nuclear energy. The aim of this initiative is to challenge China's dominance in global shipbuilding. Washington is signing a public-private partnership agreement with Core Power to develop nuclear engines. The U.S. intends to compete with China through advanced nuclear technologies, as it cannot surpass Chinese shipbuilding on price. The partnership will create a regulatory framework for licensing, insurance, and safety standards for a fleet under the American flag without government funding. British company Core Power plans to lay the keel for its first commercial nuclear vessel in 2028, attracting around $200 million from investors. Nuclear installations will allow ships to travel 50-75% faster and carry more cargo. Over the next 25 years, about 8,200 vessels are expected to be replaced, which could transition to nuclear propulsion. Major barriers include the high cost of building reactors, the need for a new financing model, and a shortage of qualified engineers. The first civilian nuclear vessels are expected to set sail no earlier than the 2030s.
