Uber Launches Driverless Taxis in London
In London, test rides of autonomous vehicles from Uber, utilizing artificial intelligence technology from Wayve, have commenced. This makes London the second city in Europe, after Zagreb, to offer driverless services. Initially, fewer than 20 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric cars equipped with Wayve's autopilot will operate in the city. Each vehicle will have a licensed operator onboard to ensure safety, but there are plans to transition to fully driverless operation in the future. Passengers ordering UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric can receive an autonomous vehicle at no extra charge. The Wayve-developed AI driver is capable of learning from its own experiences, allowing the system to adapt to new streets and complex conditions. Wayve's CEO, Alex Kendall, noted that the launch in London is significant due to the complex road infrastructure. Uber began collaborating with Wayve in 2024, investing in the developer to scale the technology for international markets. Uber's global head of autonomous mobility, Sarfraz Meradia, stated that the launch will enhance trust in driverless vehicles among users and the government.
