Sumitomo Chemical Stock (4005): Price, Board Talking Points and Outlook

By: WEEX|2026/07/19 15:44:56

Sumitomo Chemical (TSE: 4005) is one of Japan's big general chemical companies and a Nikkei 225 constituent, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime market. After a record ¥311.8 billion net loss in the year to March 2024, structural reform carried it back to net profit of ¥60.9 billion in the year to March 2026. In 2026 the central theme has become semiconductor materials — a glass-core-substrate joint venture with Samsung Electro-Mechanics and new advanced-photoresist investment — even as the stock sits at ¥523.7 (July 17, 2026 close) on a P/B of 0.86. This page summarizes the board talking points as of July 2026, the business and the semiconductor cycle, and how to read the stock.

Board and community talking points

The Yahoo Finance Japan board (4005) is an old, high-volume board, and its weekly sentiment gauge in mid-July 2026 leaned bearish — 14% "want to buy" against 50% "want to sell." Themes observed as of July 2026:

  • Petro Rabigh as a bull case. The best-received recent post tracked the shares of Saudi-listed affiliate Petro Rabigh reportedly roughly doubling from the start of the year (a board-cited level, not one we have verified).
  • Patience with "reform that lances the boil." Posters frame the company as mid-way through clearing out failed past investments, with divestitures and headcount cuts as a defensive phase that comes first.
  • Heavy underwater mood, and skepticism. Some wait to average down below ¥500, and others doubt whether a "next theme" beyond solar cells and carbon materials exists. These are observed views, not our recommendation.

The business and the semiconductor/AI cycle

Sumitomo Chemical reports in five segments: Agro & Life Solutions, ICT & Mobility Solutions, Advanced Medical Solutions, Essential & Green Materials, and Sumitomo Pharma. Semiconductor materials sit inside the ICT & Mobility Solutions segment (renamed from the retired "Information & Electronic Chemicals" label) and include semiconductor process materials, compound-semiconductor materials, optical products and high-purity aluminum.

The 2026 semiconductor theme rests on three dated items. First, a February 3, 2026 upward guidance revision credited rising shipments of semiconductor process materials. Second, on July 2, 2026 the company agreed with Korea's Samsung Electro-Mechanics to form a joint venture for glass-core substrates used in advanced semiconductor packaging (tentatively "GlaSSEM," in Korea within 2026; 66% Samsung Electro-Mechanics / 34% via Sumitomo Chemical's Korean subsidiary Dongwoo Fine-Chem), and the stock rose about 7% the next day. Third, in early July 2026 it announced a new advanced-photoresist (EUV/ArF) technology building at its Osaka plant. But the segment is not all semiconductors: for the year to March 2026, ICT & Mobility Solutions revenue fell to ¥574.2 billion and core operating profit to ¥53 billion as display materials dropped while semiconductor process materials rose — a "semis up, displays down" mix. Group-wide, core operating profit was ¥208.4 billion (+48.3%) on revenue of ¥2,328.5 billion and net profit of ¥60.9 billion — but that core operating profit was flattered by roughly ¥105.8 billion of one-off business-transfer gains (about ¥55.8 billion in Essential & Green Materials and ¥50 billion at Sumitomo Pharma), so reported operating profit actually fell 21.4% to ¥151.7 billion. Restructuring — a partial Petro Rabigh sale, exit from aluminum, folding domestic polyolefins into Prime Polymer (effective July 1, 2026), and taking Tanaka Chemical fully private (delisted January 2026) — improved the debt-to-equity ratio from 1.20x to 0.93x.

How to read the stock

The shares bottomed at ¥282.6 in April 2025, closed 2025 at ¥445.6 (+27.7%), were bought up to ¥620.6 in February 2026 on the guidance raise, and set a 52-week high of ¥625.0 on May 18 before a market-wide June (−15.9%). The July 17, 2026 close was ¥523.7 (+17.5% year to date), on a forward P/E of 12.4x, a P/B of 0.86x and a dividend yield of 3.06%. Bulls point to the core-profit rebound, the three semiconductor-materials items, a sub-1.0x P/B with a rising dividend (¥9 → ¥13.5 → ¥16 planned), deleveraging and the Petro Rabigh recovery. Bears note that core operating profit is padded by one-off gains while reported operating profit fell, the structural headwind in display materials, naphtha/FX/tariffs, and heavy reliance on Sumitomo Pharma, roughly half of whose profit accrues to minorities. This page sets no price target; the next items to watch are Q1 earnings on August 4, 2026, the GlaSSEM JV (within 2026), the polyolefin integration and the photoresist building.

Trading tokenized US semiconductor stocks on WEEX

The semiconductor and AI cycle that Sumitomo Chemical's materials feed is a global theme, expressed most directly in US chip names such as NVIDIA (NVDA). To own Sumitomo Chemical shares themselves, the standard route is a Japanese brokerage account; WEEX does not list the stock or any product tracking it. On WEEX you can trade NVDA via futures (leverage, long or short) or on the spot market, alongside tokenized US semiconductor products such as AMDON, MUON, ARMON, INTCON and SNDKON. Tokenized stocks are not the underlying shares; they are tracking products that follow the reference stock's price. See the NVIDIA (NVDA) guide and the WEEX market listings. WEEX offers crypto and tokenized US equities — not Sumitomo Chemical or any other Japanese stock, nor any proxy for them.
