Sumitomo Metal Mining Stock (5713): Price, Board Talking Points and Outlook

By: WEEX|2026/07/19 15:44:56

Sumitomo Metal Mining (TSE: 5713) is a major Japanese non-ferrous metals company, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime market. It runs the Hishikari mine — Japan's largest commercial gold mine — and spans gold, copper and nickel across resource development and smelting, alongside a functional-materials arm that makes battery cathode materials and lithium tantalate (LT) crystals. In 2026 the stock rode a gold-and-copper surge to an all-time intraday high of ¥13,300 on March 2, then roughly halved to ¥6,794 by July 17 as gold reversed. This page summarizes the board talking points as of July 2026, where the business touches the semiconductor/AI cycle, and how to read the stock.

Board and community talking points

The Yahoo Finance Japan board (5713) is active — roughly 60 posts over 48 hours in mid-July 2026 — and the mood is loss-processing, not euphoria. Themes observed as of July 2026:

  • Bewilderment at the depth of the fall. Posts note the stock has shed more than ¥2,000 in a month and ask why Sumitomo Metal Mining and peers such as Mitsubishi Materials are being sold so hard.
  • Leftover gold mania. One post flags large purchases of year-end $20,000 gold options, though the poster himself concedes it may be nothing more than leveraged positioning — so it is not one-way bullishness.
  • Structural bearishness on nickel. Commentary ties the collapse in the year to March 2025 (an operating loss) to Indonesian oversupply crushing nickel prices. These are observed views, not our recommendation.

The business and the semiconductor/AI cycle

The business runs in three segments. Resources: the Hishikari mine, the Côté gold mine in Canada (commercial production since August 2024), a stake in Peru's Cerro Verde copper mine, and a Chilean copper operation. Smelting: HPAL nickel in the Philippines and copper in Ehime. Materials: high-share battery cathode materials, nickel sulfate, lithium tantalate (LT) crystals used in smartphone SAW filters, and gold-tin (AuSn) packaging for IoT and 5G devices. The touchpoint with the semiconductor, AI and electrification cycle sits in that materials arm — but the whole 2026 price story was gold and copper, and the company is a metals major, not a semiconductor stock.

FY3/2026 results (announced May 11, 2026): revenue ¥1,741.5 billion, operating profit ¥191.2 billion (against a ¥15.8 billion operating loss the year before), net profit ¥176.29 billion and an annual dividend of ¥228, lifted by higher gold and copper prices and a strong Côté mine. Guidance for FY3/2027, however, is lower: revenue of ¥1,883 billion but net profit of ¥156 billion (−11.5%) and a ¥207 dividend, with six of the eight major non-ferrous names guiding to lower profit. On capital policy, the company completed and cancelled a buyback (June 1, 2026), but no stock split has been announced. An international environmental NGO also submitted an 11,315-signature petition over the Philippine nickel operations in June 2026.

How to read the stock

The shares climbed from a ¥2,401.5 low in April 2025 to close 2025 at ¥6,357 (+76% for the year), then set serial all-time highs into early 2026 on record copper and a gold melt-up, reaching an intraday ¥13,300 (¥13,050 close) on March 2, 2026. Gold then fell more than 20% from its highs and copper wobbled; on July 17 the stock dropped 6.6% to ¥6,794, roughly half its peak. It trades at a P/B of 0.89x, a forward P/E of 13.2x and a dividend yield of 3.05% (at the July 17, 2026 price). Bulls point to earnings back near record levels, a sub-1.0x P/B with a 3% yield, and growth in the materials arm. Bears note that the company's own guidance is for lower profit, the heavy dependence on gold and copper, and nickel oversupply. The dividend has moved a lot (¥98 → ¥104 → ¥228 → ¥207 forecast), so this is not a stable-dividend story. This page sets no price target; the next checkpoints are Q1 earnings on August 10, 2026 and the gold and copper markets themselves.

Trading tokenized US semiconductor stocks on WEEX

The semiconductor and AI cycle that Sumitomo Metal Mining's materials arm feeds is a global theme, expressed most directly in US chip names such as NVIDIA (NVDA). To own Sumitomo Metal Mining shares themselves, the standard route is a Japanese brokerage account; WEEX does not list the stock or any product tracking it. On WEEX you can trade NVDA via futures (leverage, long or short) or on the spot market, alongside tokenized US semiconductor products such as AMDON, MUON, ARMON, INTCON and SNDKON. Tokenized stocks are not the underlying shares; they are tracking products that follow the reference stock's price. See the NVIDIA (NVDA) guide and the WEEX market listings. WEEX offers crypto and tokenized US equities — not Sumitomo Metal Mining or any other Japanese stock, nor any proxy for them.

FAQ

Where can I see Sumitomo Metal Mining's message board?

On the Yahoo Finance Japan board (5713) and Minkabu (5713), where retail investors discuss the stock and price.

Why has the stock fallen so much?

Gold, which had driven the shares up, peaked in March 2026 and fell more than 20%, and copper wobbled too. Against an intraday all-time high of ¥13,300 on March 2, the July 17 close was ¥6,794 — roughly half.

Is Sumitomo Metal Mining a semiconductor stock?

Its official sector is non-ferrous metals, and its earnings pillars are gold, copper and nickel. LT crystals, AuSn packaging and battery cathode materials sit in the materials arm, but the main driver of the share price is the metals market.

When are the next earnings?

Q1 results for the year to March 2027 are scheduled for August 10, 2026.
