Musk Mentions Potential 200% Annual Increase in AI Memory Demand
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, identified memory as a limiting factor for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. He stated that while memory production may increase by 20% annually, demand could rise by over 200% per year. During SpaceX's Q2 2026 earnings call on the 4th, Musk said, "The current limiting factor is memory." SpaceX recorded revenues of $7.8 billion in Q2. As AI data centers expand, the role of memory becomes more critical, and if memory supply cannot keep up with demand, the pace of system development may be constrained. Micron Technology reported revenues of $41.46 billion and a net income of $28.24 billion for its fiscal Q3 2026. The chairman of Micron stated that the strategic value of memory in the AI era has been reflected in their performance. Musk also mentioned AI logic and memory supply as limiting factors during Tesla's Q4 2025 earnings call. Market interpretations are mixed, with some assessments indicating that concerns regarding memory semiconductor stocks have eased somewhat. However, the memory industry is characterized by significant price volatility, and profit forecasts may vary due to supply expansions, long-term supply contract prices, and competition from Chinese companies.
