Cardano: The 3 Deadlines to Know for the ADA Ecosystem
Two phases, one assumed timeline. Cardano has not deviated from its technical roadmap. According to the latest update from its coordinating body Intersect, the Dijkstra upgrade remains on track with its original scope and timeline, with Linear Leios first to absorb more transactions, followed by Ouroboros Peras the following year to accelerate block finality. Nothing spectacular in the announcement itself, but consistency holds value for a network that has long carried a reputation for slowness. Key points of this article:
Cardano has maintained its timeline for the Dijkstra upgrade, with Linear Leios expected by the end of 2026 to increase throughput without compromising security.
Phase 2 with Ouroboros Peras is anticipated in the second quarter of 2027, introducing faster finality after Leios is completed.
Dijkstra, Phase 1: Leios Aims for Late 2026 Without Compromising Cardano's Security
The first phase of Dijkstra introduces Linear Leios, the central building block of this scaling effort. Contrary to what one might think, Leios does not replace Praos, the security model that has protected Cardano since its inception. It adds Endorser Blocks, capable of referencing additional transactions and certified by committees based on validator participation, a means to increase throughput without touching existing consensus guarantees.
According to Intersect's weekly update No. 124, published on August 14, this phase 1 aims for code completion by the fourth quarter of 2026, with a hoped-for launch before the end of the year. The document is clear on one point: these dates remain estimates, not guarantees, and testing as well as governance votes may push back the deadline.
Peras, Expected in Q2 2027, Must Wait for Leios to Be Laid
Ouroboros Peras is waiting in phase 2. This module adds a voting layer that allows committees of stake pool operators to validate recent chain tips, a mechanism for faster finality than the classic chain depth rules of Praos.
Its current target is the second quarter of 2027, via a separate hard fork, once phase 1 has delivered the registry structures and protocol parameters that Peras needs to operate. This sequencing is not arbitrary. Peras directly relies on the foundations laid by Leios, making it impossible to reverse the order without rebuilding everything.
Amaru and On-Chain Governance, the Two Parallel Projects of Dijkstra
While Leios progresses on the protocol side, another project is advancing behind the scenes. Amaru, an open-source implementation in Rust of the Cardano node, is already validating the chain and synchronizing with its tip. Its block production on the main network is targeted for November 2026, a welcome diversification for a network still heavily reliant on its historical client in Haskell. Amaru's internal roadmap even details the milestones: a general version targeted for September 30, Dijkstra compatibility on October 29, and then Leios on November 26, all development dates rather than firm commitments for the main network.
This timeline is not decreed from an office either. Dijkstra introduces protocol parameters that Cardano's on-chain governance can only modify if they are explicitly included in the safeguards of its Constitution. Input Output must therefore submit a targeted constitutional amendment, with a submission expected no later than epoch 655, which begins on September 11. Four proposals have already been received via the dedicated portal as of August 14. The institutional mechanics thus advance at the same pace as the code, neither faster nor slower.
